Their children have enjoyed the Kool-Aid version with cream of tartar that smells wonderful but stores best in the refrigerator because it seems to dry out in times of low humidity and becomes sticky in damp cool weather. I recommend zip bags or plastic wrap for storage because a frost-free fridge will dry the surface if the dough is stored in a plastic container, at least that has been my experience.

Recently, my niece wanted to make some play dough for a preschool activity box she is assembling for her daughter. She wanted a recipe that would store well without refrigeration. I researched dough recipes and found an article that claims that citric acid is a better antimicrobial for play dough and also improves the texture. Additionally, my niece was concerned if the dough smelled too appealing, Valentine might eat it. She is still at the age where taste-testing is a learning experience.

Last week we tried my favorite play dough recipe from April, 2011:
Kool-Aid® Playdough
1 cup flour
1 package unsweetened Kool-Aid®
1/4 cup salt
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
2 tablespoons cream of tartar
1 cup hot water

Mix flour, salt, cream of tartar, and Kool-Aid® together well with a fork in a medium pan. Add hot water and oil. Stir over medium-low heat 3 to 5 minutes. When mixture forms a ball in the pan, remove. Knead until smooth. Put in a plastic bag and refrigerate. Dough is smooth, non-sticky, and smells nice.

We omitted the drink mix and cream of tartar and replace them with 2 tablespoons of citric acid and food coloring.

The dough does seem more springy and softer than the original version. I might make more and try scenting it with essential oils like lavender and the citric oils like lemon, orange, and lime. They are inexpensive and also have antimicrobial properties. Also, I will be observing how well the dough stores in a plastic container (the article recommends zip bags).

Note: The link to the article on citric acid links to another blog entry that reviews 3 gluten-free dough recipes.

Sallyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04358441492114225772noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4077293711617809162.post-4605773222476566382021-05-16T09:34:00.006-07:002021-05-16T10:51:55.641-07:00Another Year
So, 2020 came and went and now nearly half of another year. To be honest, this new normal is not all fun and games. I don't like it but as I child I learned to cope with change because we moved frequently from one state to another as my father was an administrative engineer and changing locations was an opportunity to receive a pay increase and gain expertise. That being said, my method of coping is to keep busy with tasks and hobbies I enjoy. Knitting has taken a back seat as I have focused on free motion quilting.

Free motion quilting is meditative and hypnotic or like a runner's high or a zen moment or maybe an obsessive compulsive disorder. The steady hum of the machine is so soothing that the addiction of filling fabric with thread patterns is my drug of choice for easing tension and relaxing when the options for travelling and quilt shop hopping have been reduced.

Here are a few of my recent projects to learn the idiosyncrasies of new stationary longarm machine.

From a quilted fat quarter came 3 little baskets. The instructions for the 3 little baskets from a fat quarter are from a discontinued pattern by Christina Cameli. She has been offering an updated version for blog followers, 3 nesting baskets from a quilted half yard. The smallest basket in the current pdf is the same size as the one below:

Christina's classes on Craftsy/Bluprint and Course Craft were the first of several that have influenced my work and motivated me to keep working on my skills. She featured her panels on Instagram and I didn't want to wait for an order so I drew sections on a fat quarter and filled them free-hand from her photo. Her panel is 20 inches square but my version is 16 inches. My goal was to work between free motion quilting and ruler work without breaking thread and switching feet. I hope to take Jane's feathers class in the near future. Her quilting is exquisite. Mine is coming along but not as consistent as I would like but seeing progress is encouraging:

A recent birthday gift for one of the DiL's. I took a year off from blogging to focus on acquiring a new skill. Since Bluprint began as Craftsy, I have been purchasing online classes but I hadn't really joined the forum as a member. In March of 2019, I bought a year's membership with the goal of learning to free motion quilt on a domestic machine and eventually my longarm. My membership came with free forever classes and almost all the classes I enrolled in for the last year have been on free motion quilting. Bluprint has been my favorite online class delivery system and educational community.

Now Bluprint is closing and I am exploring ways to save my content, almost 10 years of classes and the accompanying resources. I have managed to collect all of the patterns I had in my library but now the task of downloading the class videos. This program looks promising, Allavsoft. For the price of a Bluprint class on sale, one can use Allavsoft for a month. Stay posted. I will be busy.

I could write about many topics. So much has happened but I will be brief and stick to the isolation sewing details.

In the last 3 months I made more masks than I care to count. It all started with a nurse on our block needing a few to wear on her house calls. Then her friends at the hospital wanted some, really a lot, and now it's special requests from family and friends.

My personal favorite for my small face is from I Think Sew. It is free, fast, and folds flat. I put them in my purse, jacket and jeans pockets, the car gear boxes, and in zip bags to give away.

In between masks, I have done a bit of happy sewing. Today, I finished up a piece of thread painting and free motion quilting into a zip bag for a belated birthday gift.

This zip bag is the second I have done with coloring on fabric with crayons and then adding some thread painting. The first was for my DiL's birthday in May.

My daughter asked for a sturdy book bag for her birthday. She found the perfect fabric but thought the batik print would be too thin. I said, "No problem, I can quilt that."

It's been a productive start to 2020 in spite of all the distractions. Now, I hope to get back to quilting on the Incredible Hulk (Innova longarm). I have a top I just finished so I can practice some ruler work and free-hand fills from Natalia Bonner's online classes and YouTube videos. The pattern for the quilt is a new one called Quick QST Quilt from Colorfun Quilts by Erin Ryan.

So, there is the last few months in one quick overview. I guess I should cover the last 6 months of 2019, also, but maybe in another entry.

The month of January flew by and my Elm Street OMG didn't get finished. The quilt label will have to be done in the next few days before we see our longtime friends whose daughter had the baby girl just this week.

Other projects were finished. A Hanukkah quilt top was pieced, quilted, and bound. Now to make a label. Ten quilt blocks were made for a 2019 Christmas quilt. I am really trying to avoid the holiday rush this year.

Just today, I made a new bib for Jojo and two pillowcases for my little sis's best friend now living in Texas. They won't get there for Chris' birthday but they will by Valentine's Day.

The bib was needed and I wanted to play with my new toy, a genuine KAM Snap Tool and snaps. I have been wanting a tool to apply plastic snaps for years. With enough Amazon Prime Points saved, I splurged for my birthday and ordered one. It works amazingly well. I wish I had it all the years I was making clothes for my babies and toddlers. The KAM snaps go in easily and perfectly. My old tools applied the pronged metal snaps and I had a very high rate of application failure with those style. I have lots of those snaps left but I am afraid they will not be used unless I am desperate. The new tool is too much fun!
Just a quickie to link up to the Elm Street Quilts January 2019 OMG. My goal is to put a label on this sweet little quilt that was originally intended for a new adopted granddaughter, but we were blessed with an adorable grandson who has stolen my heart. It will go to friend's whose daughter is having a little girl.
Two quilts are in need of labels before they can be wrapped and put under the tree. Betty's Original Embroideries offered two reindeer alphabet fonts that should make perfect labels for these quilts. Hopefully, I will get to the embroidery this weekend and finish the labels before Christmas. I have had bronchitis and have been getting behind in most things except one. I binged on Christmas movies and finished the binding on my November OMG for Elm Street Quilts. The original goal was to finish the top but I found time to make a back and quilt it.

My dilemma is resolved. I didn't really like the red metallic print for the last border with all of the other prints. A Google search yielded the print in the top left of the photo and then the shop just happened to have another one of the prints in that line that will work for the binding. The fabrics have arrived and I can proceed with borders and finish piecing the top.
October flew by but my Elm Street Quilts OMG was met. I am waiting for the letter "J" in the free Reindeer Peeking font to come up at Betty's Embroidery for the special label.

Let the glory of God be extolled, and God’s great name be
hallowed in the world whose creation God willed. May God
rule in our own day, in our own lives, and in the life of all
Israel, and let us say: Amen.
Let God’s great name be blessed for ever and ever.

Beyond all the praises, songs, and adorations that we can utter
is the Holy One, the Blessed One, whom yet we glorify, honor,
and exalt. And let us say: Amen.

For us and for all Israel, may the blessing of peace and the
promise of life come true, and let us say: Amen.

May the One who causes peace to reign in the high heavens,
cause peace to reign among us, all Israel, and all the world, and
let us say: Amen.

May the Source of peace send peace to all who mourn, and
comfort to all who are bereaved. Amen.

Christmas sewing has begun. One quilt is ready to bind and another is in the planning stages. My Elm Street Quilts October OMG is to get the binding on the first holiday quilt off the Incredible Hulk.

The Rudolph quilt was quick and easy layer cake quilt inspired by a freebie from the Fat Quarter Shop. I made a couple of revisions to accommodate the theme fabric blocks in my layer cake.
Goal met, binding is on. I am pleased to have another UFO completed for the September Elm Street Quilts OMG. DH likes the quilt so much, I haven't gifted it. Hanging or otherwise displaying the quilt is questionable. The two rooms where it would look best don't have wall space for hanging or furniture where it can be draped. We are still debating the issue. My good intentions of blessing someone with this quilt have been temporarily sidetracked.

Yesterday, I went to get my travel sewing machine kit with little tools to remove a throat plate and the odd bobbins I keep for testing machines were a tangled mess. Years ago I saw a tip for making an inexpensive bobbin tray from 5/8" OD - 1/2" ID vinyl tubing. The tubing was purchased and sitting in my workbench drawer waiting. I finally made the tray and it works great! It holds the bobbins tidily in the pencil case I use to hold the tools.

Use sharp and strong craft scissors to cut the tubing to the length preferred and then make a lengthwise cut to separate it. The heavy tubing has enough strength and memory to hold bobbins of slightly different diameters securely. Additionally, the tubing can be cut to make small collars for each bobbin but I find them more difficult to cut for the narrow Class L bobbins for my two Pfaffs and they are difficult to remove on larger Class M bobbins that have only a small amount of thread on them.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">The top was set aside while I finished another older UFO for the month of August. I also watched other longarm quilters in YouTube videos take on quilts with worse borders than mine. With 10 years of longarm quilting experience of quilting mostly my own quilts with no issues, I decided I needed to accept the challenge and leave on the wavy borders. The results were an amazing and I am very pleased.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">All fullness was worked in with no pleats or puckers. The quilt is flat and square with straight borders. <span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">My Elm Street Quilts OMG for September is to finish binding the quilt. With some determination and a cancellation, more was accomplished this month than I had hoped. When our niece's maid of honor decided to stay with a friend, I didn't have to focus on cleaning and meals for a house guest. The quilt binding was made on schedule and then attached and hand stitch down while DH attended his 50th high school reunion and I sat at home indulging in audio books and movies.

We also squeezed in the trip to Silverton, OR. The focal point of the outing was the Oregon Garden. After a dry hot summer, the garden is still beautiful but not as lush and green as they would be in May or early June. The free tram tour is well worth the time with bit of humor added to the informative overview of the park.

Unfortunately, I didn't take any pictures in the gardens, only on the entry to the park. The only Frank Lloyd Wright structure in Oregon was moved and reconstructed near the garden gate. We didn't pay for a tour as there are several videos on YouTube that show off his interior design that includes an extensive use of built-in storage to avoid the clutter of furnishings.

The exterior of the Gordon house may appear simple but the striking features are the unique use of natural light and the way the architect brings the surrounding landscape into the interior of the home with floor to ceiling windows on the ground floor and the light filtering, wood trimmed upper windows. Also, the use of wood on the exterior of the house makes the cement block home appear more luxurious.
Just above the Frank Lloyd Wright Gordon house, is an Angel of Hope Garden. This is one of many angels scattered around the world dedicated to parents who have lost a child. The first angel was commissioned at the request of the author, Richard Paul Evans, in a response to readers of The Christmas Box. The Silverton Angel is one of two in the state of Oregon. The other is in a cemetery in Portland.
I am not ready for Fall. Temperatures have dropped significantly and rain has signaled the change of seasons. The immediate and important benefits are clean air and forest fire control. If it weren't for consequences of tinder dry land, Summer could last another month or so.

It seems like the piles on my cutting table are multiplying. I should be making progress on cleaning it off so I can use it for cutting instead of sorting fabrics for quilts and other projects but I keep getting distracted and instead of organizing, I sew or quilt instead and pull more fabrics out of boxes, adding to the disarray. Of course, buying more fabric doesn't help either.

Two small projects for the month would subtract from some of the mess on the cutting table. If I make binding for the quilt I just took off the quilting machine and the pillowcase that goes with the quilt I made my newest grandson, I can put some extra fabric away.

There is a diagonal print stripe that will make great binding for the Yellow Brick Road below.
And there is surplus of the scattered bunny fabric in the last border of this quilt for the pillowcase. I promised a pillowcase would appear sometime in the future.
I hope to accomplish more but my sister has doctor appointments, our niece's maid of honor is staying with us the week of the wedding, we have missionary friends dropping by the same weekend, and at the end of the month, it would be nice to take a day trip down to Silverton and Mt. Angel to see the sights.

While I ignored the challenges of the quilt top in the previous post, the youngest of the 2 grands and I tie dyed. Well really, the 6 year old was the only one that really had any interest. Our efforts were rewarded and he was very pleased with the results. So was mom. We dyed some flour sack dishtowels for her. The three basic colors in the Dharma kit were very bright and attractive. I will order them the next time I plan a tie dye event.
It has been said: "Life is a series of waves to be embraced and overcome." Some longarm quilters would say to embrace the challenge of this quilt top. The wavy borders are not that bad; some quilters have taken on far worse. Proof exists on YouTube as they demonstrate their prowess with their longarm using varying techniques to conquer the waves.

Two weeks ago, I was planning to take the borders off and use a different sewing machine to stitch them on again. I am convinced it was having the Pfaff's dual feed engaged that caused this problem because the previous quilt with all bias edges was completed with the Janome 9400 without the AccuFeed foot attached and the borders went on flawlessly with no issues or challenges for me to conquer.

My fear of the challenge has diminished and the thrill of conquest is building. Stay tuned to see if I rise to the occasion or cave in and retreat to my favorite chair to remove the offensive borders.

All quilts deserve a label and all quilters should sign their work. With those two directives in mind, I finally ordered some small labels for my charity quilts and small projects. All special quilts will still show off a label made with my embroidery machine.

The labels are from a company called Wunderlabel. They have a US office in Springfield, Illinois. I was pleased with the price, service, and quality. They are easy to pierce with a needle so I had no trouble taking tiny stitches to secure them.
